Alternative Approaches Before Compulsory Acquisition

Compulsory acquisition is a last resort. The Department's Environment and Heritage Service can offer financial assistance for repairs or advice on funding alternatives, and the Buildings at Risk Register may help identify potential restoring purchasers if the current owner cannot or will not restore the building.

Compulsory acquisition is seen as a last resort. The Department's Environment and Heritage Service may be able to offer financial assistance for repairs, or may advise on other methods of funding. If the owner is not interested in restoring the listed building or does not have the means, then selling or leasing the building to a restoring purchaser should be considered and the Buildings at Risk Register produced by the Ulster Architectural Heritage Society in association with Environment and Heritage Service may prove very helpful in finding a potential purchaser.
