Policy RET 3 – Local Centres Retail Development Criteria

Retail development in local centres must not exceed specified unit sizes, must meet identified local need, protect centre vitality, complement the centre's role, and be easily accessible on foot with good connectivity.

Within local centres planning permission will be granted for a proposal for retail development provided that: a. Any individual unit created (including by extension) does not exceed 500sqm gross external for convenience or 200sqm gross external for comparison shopping; b. The proposal meets a local need or deficiency; c. The proposal would not adversely affect the vitality and viability of centres in the catchment; d. It would complement and not alter the role and function of the centre or route; and e. It would be easily accessible by foot, creates linkages and connections to improve accessibility.
