Road safety considerations for siting and illumination
Road safety issues are less likely in existing industrial or commercial centres with appropriate illumination levels. Signs can positively contribute to public safety through direction, but clutter should be avoided.
Thoughtful siting and illumination can overcome many of the potential hazards listed above. Road safety issues are less likely to occur where an advertisement/sign is proposed within an existing industrial or commercial centre and when the level of illumination proposed is appropriate to the location. The council will also bear in mind that in appropriate circumstances advertisements/signage can positively contribute to public safety, for example, by directing drivers and others to their destination. However, in these instances the avoidance of clutter should also be considered.
