Design and Placement Considerations for Advertising

Sensitively designed and positioned signage can enhance an area's character, but must prevent clutter, control illumination, and protect listed buildings, conservation areas, and townscape character areas from adverse effects.

Sensitively designed and positioned signage has the potential to enhance the character and appearance of an area, however care must be taken to ensure that advertisements will not detract from the place where it is to be displayed or its surroundings and that it will not prejudice public safety. In particular, it is important to prevent clutter, adequately control signs involving illumination and to protect features such as listed buildings, conservation areas and areas of townscape character (ATCs) from the potential adverse effects of advertising.
