Character and setting of River Lagan - amenity and regeneration context

The River Lagan functions as an amenity corridor within Belfast city centre supporting recreational users and water-based activities, with recent regeneration projects demonstrating its potential for mixed-use development and public realm enhancement.

The River Lagan has in more recent years become an amenity corridor within the city centre context and beyond, catering for a wide range of users including walkers, joggers and cyclists as well as an increased use of water-based activities. The potential for river front sections of the city to be regenerated has been witnessed by the recent construction of the mixed use development scheme at City Quays one of the largest strategic investments to be undertaken by Belfast Harbour as well as the aspirations contained in the approved masterplan at Sirocco.
