Addressing physical barriers and permeability

Strategic road infrastructure and motorways have created disconnected zones ('shatterzones') in urban areas by fragmenting historic neighborhoods and limiting local movement and permeability.

One of the main contributors which constrains permeability and movement across the city is the legacy of strategic road infrastructure and the degree of disconnect that this has caused at a local level, an issue which is readily apparent along the northern edge of the city centre. The extent of this issue is such that the term 'shatterzone' has been coined to describe the damage caused to the urban environment by interventions such as motorways and feeder routes which were carved through some of the city's more historic and tightly knitted urban areas to cater for an increasingly motorised society.
