Adaptive reuse of existing tall buildings

Tall buildings can be repurposed and adapted to meet future needs as a sustainable form of development. The council supports adaptive and sustainable reuse of tall buildings across the city, with each case assessed on its own merits.

Due to their inherent strength and robustness, the lifespan of tall buildings can often extend over numerous decades. Allowing these structures to be reimagined to meet the needs of future generations is the key to unlocking their survival. The adaptive reuse and reinventing of our tall building stock is therefore one of the most sustainable forms of development that can help extend the lives of these buildings while regenerating brownfield sites. Repurposing tall buildings that may have outlived their intended use, can breathe life into these structures and provide new floorspace opportunities often within busy, inner city locations. While each case would need to be assessed on its own merits, in principle the Council supports the adaptive and sustainable reuse of tall buildings across the city.
