Tripartite Composition of Tall Buildings

Tall buildings can be designed using a traditional three-part composition comprising a base, middle, and top section, each with distinct roles in the overall design, though variations may be appropriate in specific contexts.

While the design of a tall building will vary in response to surrounding context and intended use, they can often follow the traditional tripartite ordering of three integrated components; base, middle and top, albeit expressed in a contemporary manner. All three components have a particular role to play in the overall composition of the building, with each explained in the following paragraphs. It is acknowledged that there may however be occasions when variations of this principle could be considered appropriate.
