Bin storage area design requirements

Bin storage should be easily accessible and well-integrated into the layout, positioned to the side and rear of residential properties where possible, with careful design of materials and screening to minimise visual impact. Larger schemes with euro bins should have dedicated storage areas with separate accesses for different users.

Bin storage areas should be appropriately designed so that they are easily accessible and well-integrated within the proposed layout. In the case of residential development, bins should be stored in easily accessible yet visually unobtrusive locations, ideally to the side and rear of properties. Where this is not possible, areas to the front of the property may be acceptable but should be adequately designed and integrated to minimise visual impact. The choice of enclosure materials can reflect that of the building or incorporate screen planting. In larger schemes, where euro bins are often used, dedicated, unobtrusive storage areas should be identified to the side and rear of the development with separate accesses provided for residential users, commercial users and refuse collectors. Where bin storage is placed to the front of the development, it should be considered and designed as an integral component to the overall arrangement. Within larger schemes external bin stores should be easily accessible an integrated within the overall design.
