Building layout to promote overlooking and activity
Development layouts should position buildings to front the street with active frontages (doors, windows, balconies, terraces) that overlook public spaces, deter crime through visibility, and encourage street-level activity.
The layout of proposed development should promote a sense of natural surveillance/overlooking. When determining how buildings front the street, the location of doors, windows and balconies and/or external terraces and their relationship with both public and private spaces is critical in creating opportunities for overlooking and the ability for activity to spill out onto the street. This will help create environments that deter crime as it provides 'eyes on the street' and a higher chance of detection and awareness. Where necessary security features are required, these should be of high quality design that are appropriate to context and fit in with their surroundings.
