Adequate enclosure and space scale
Development proposals should consider how the scale of buildings affects the sense of enclosure and safety in spaces, taking account of established local patterns and whether spaces are narrow, wide, or vast.
Making an area feel safe and secure is an essential component to its success. The scale of development can also impact levels of enclosure. Where spaces are narrow, taller elements may introduce climatic changes that deter users. Within wider vast spaces, small scale development could have a negative impact creating vast voids of space that are less welcoming. Proposals should therefore take into account the space they wish to create, whether this be a public square, primary street or private courtyard and consider the established pattern of development within the area.
