Fitzroy Avenue Social Housing Case Study
This case study demonstrates design quality in social housing through sensitive contextual design, including retention of existing façades, sympathetic new construction, and respect for established architectural character within an Area of Townscape Character.
Shortlisted for RSUA Design Awards 2019, this project reflects a new focus by local housing associations on design quality. The scheme retained an existing red brick façade with new floorspace above alongside a new contemporary, yet sympathetic building. The scale, form and massing of both buildings were designed as a creative response within the Area of Townscape Character and the established built context of the Holylands. Here an emphasis was placed on the building's relationship with the street, and designed to respect the architectural rhythms of the nearby Victorian and Georgian terraces, reinforcing the area's sense of place.
