Built Heritage Designations and Character Protection

Listed buildings, monuments, conservation areas, and townscape character designations protect and enhance unique qualities through the buildings database and conservation area guides. Understanding these is essential for contextual development design.

The quality of urban areas is also outlined through built heritage designations. The city has numerous listed buildings and monuments, conservation areas and areas of townscape character. These designations are designed to protect and enhance their unique qualities for future generations. The buildings database, which contains records of buildings which have been judged to be of sufficient architectural or historic merit to be surveyed, can be accessed on the Department for Communities website. The many conservation area guides that apply across the city, can be downloaded from the Department for Infrastructures website.
