City Corridors - Role and Function
City corridors are arterial routes that link the city centre to suburbs, functioning as both transportation connections and local high streets. They generate activity nodes and create distinctive sense of place, with gateways marking main entrances to the city.
The city centre is linked to the suburbs by a number of city corridors (arterial routes). These city corridors not only play an important role in connecting the residential areas of the surrounding suburbs but also function as local high streets. Local activity along city corridors generates nodal points that are vibrant and help create a unique sense of place. As city corridors reach the city centre, they also mark the main entrance points to the city, these entrances or 'gateways' can act as visual markers within the city and contribute towards a legible and distinctive sense of place.
