Energy efficiency considerations for extensions and alterations
When planning extensions or alterations, designers should consider energy efficiency in both design and construction, treating it as an opportunity to improve the existing property's energy performance in ways sympathetic to its age and fabric.
In considering the energy efficiency of extensions or alterations, it is important to fully consider the design and construction phases of the build and specifically how to get the most out of the fabric of the building. Planning an extension or alteration to a property can also present an ideal opportunity to contemplate an energy efficient solution for the existing property also. Where this is the case it is important that energy efficient measures introduced are sympathetic to the property's building fabric, age and construction.
