Strategic Planning Policy Statement core principles for design and place-making

The SPPS establishes core principles supporting good design and positive place-making in residential development, with councils expected to develop local policy or guidance for quality in residential extensions and alterations.

The Strategic Planning Policy Statement (SPPS) identifies core principles to assist with plan-making and decision taking. It recognises the need to support good design and positive place making; and that good design contributes to the creation of places to live that are safe and attractive and is a key element in achieving sustainable development. It states that Councils should bring forward local planning policy or guidance for achieving quality in residential development, including proposals for residential extensions or alterations.
