Balancing Extension Aspirations Against Impacts
Applications must balance the desire to extend or alter a property against impacts on neighbouring amenity and character and appearance. Each application is treated on merit according to existing legislation, planning policy, and this SPG.
It is important that the desire to extend or alter an existing property is balanced against consideration of the impact of such works on neighbouring amenity and the character and appearance of the individual property and its wider surroundings. There may also be occasions where existing residential properties were not originally designed to be extended or have already reached the limit to which extending is appropriate. Therefore, every application for an extension or alteration within the Belfast City Council area will be treated on merit, taking into account the existing legislation and planning policy framework and the guidance and policy described within this SPG.
