Lift core location and dimensions

A suitable lift location must be identified on planning drawings with specific minimum dimensions for the lift (900mm width, 1250mm depth) and landing space (minimum 1500mm length and width on each level), with a pre-formed structural opening built into the floor.

A suitable location for the lift core and its connecting spaces should be clearly identified on planning drawings, with space identified at both ground and first floor level. Space should be sufficient to accommodate a lift with a width of 900mm and depth of 1250mm when measured to the internal, and have a landing on each level not less than 1500mm (length and width). Further guidance is available in NI Building Regulations 'Technical Booklet R: Access to and use of buildings'. A structural opening should be built in and readily identifiable on the floor surface beneath the floor covering. It is preferable that the lift connect from the living/living-dining room to a bedroom adjacent to a bathroom.
