Access to residential units through front doors or shared courtyards
Residential units should have direct access to the street through a front door where possible, or through a shared courtyard with direct street access. All entrances must be visible, well lit, secure, clearly numbered, and sheltered from weather.
Where the layout permits, access to units within new residential development should be through a front door with direct access to the street. In circumstances where this cannot be achieved, particularly in cases where buildings are to be reused or in larger new build schemes, units should access a shared courtyard or other communal area/space with direct access to the street. In any event, all entrances should be visible, well lit, secure and clearly numbered. Main entrances should also be sheltered from the weather (see 'Entrances' in Section 5).
