Sunlight and Shadowing in Public Open Space

Building height and orientation must be considered to ensure adequate sunlight reaches public open space throughout the year, with attention to existing sun paths and shadowing to maximise usability.

Thought should be given to existing sun paths and shadowing to maximise the benefits of sunny weather and encourage socialising. It is important that the height and orientation of buildings (both existing and proposed) are considered, so that adequate levels of sunlight can reach areas of public open space throughout the year. Overshadowing can be a factor if building height increases without corresponding increases in the width and depth of open space.
