Permeable Layout and Traffic Calming Measures

Residential developments should incorporate a permeable layout with interconnected carriageways and multiple access points, along with traffic calming measures such as changes in horizontal alignment or vertical displacement to keep vehicle speeds low and improve safety.

a permeable layout – achieved via a network of interconnected carriageways and, where appropriate, a number of access points to the development; and ii. the incorporation of traffic calming measures – careful consideration of road design at the earliest stage of scheme development is necessary for traffic calming measures to be incorporated as an integral part of the residential environment, helping to keep speeds low and improve safety, without the need for 'hard engineered' traffic calming solutions. Such measures may include changes in horizontal alignment or vertical displacement.
