Infill housing in established residential areas

Infill housing must be carefully considered in established residential areas, particularly older areas with distinctive character. Intensifying building scale and massing can harm local character, diminish open spaces and mature vegetation, and when combined with parking and refuse storage impacts, can undermine valued qualities and damage built heritage.

Infill housing in established residential areas will not always be appropriate, particularly in many older residential areas with distinctive townscapes often dating from the Victorian or Edwardian periods. Intensifying the scale and massing of buildings in such areas can adversely affect local character and lead to a loss of valued open garden spaces, mature trees and shrubs. When combined with the impact of ancillary activities such as car parking and refuse storage, such development, if unchecked, can undermine the qualities that people value, and damage built heritage.
