Incorporation of SuDS across different development scales
SuDS measures can be incorporated into most types of built development at different scales, from domestic applications using green roofs and permeable paving to larger projects including swales, ponds, or wetlands. Trees and soft landscaping also provide significant water management and flood alleviation benefits.
SuDS measures can be incorporated into a wide range of development proposals, including at different scales. Most types of built development offer potential for some SuDS measures, irrespective of scale. For example, domestic applications and small commercial extensions can incorporate green roofs and permeable paving, whereas larger projects can, in addition, include swales, ponds or wetlands. Permeable paving within new residential and commercial developments can reduce the risk of flooding associated with surface water run-off. Trees and soft landscaping can also provide significant benefits in terms of water management and flood alleviation and can be incorporated into most development proposals. In this respect, it is important that SuDS measures are considered early in the design process and that the measures selected are appropriate and effective, including on a cumulative basis.
