Recognition of SuDS and natural environmental processes in planning
The planning system should help mitigate and adapt to environmental change by promoting green infrastructure and sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) to reduce flood risk and improve water quality, as required by the Water Environment (Water Framework Directive) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2003.
The SPPS recognises that the planning system should help to mitigate and adapt to environmental change by working with natural environmental processes, for example through promoting the development of green infrastructure and the use of SuDS to reduce flood risk and improve water quality. The Water Environment (Water Framework Directive) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2003 also provide a legal imperative to consider the introduction of measures such as SuDS and water level control to mitigate against floods.
