SuDS Definition and Role

SuDS are management practices and control systems designed to drain surface water sustainably, reducing runoff, improving water quality, and enhancing biodiversity, particularly in urban areas.

SuDS are defined as management practices and control systems designed to drain surface water in a more sustainable way than conventional systems. Reducing and decreasing the amount of surface water run-off helps to manage water resources more sustainably. SuDS also have a role in improving the quality of the run-off from a development and enhancing nature conservation/biodiversity, particularly in built up urban areas. SuDS measures also form part of the city's green and blue infrastructure and are supported by the council's Green and Blue Infrastructure Plan.
