Pollution effects and environmental quality assessment

Development must consider effects of pollution on health, natural environment and amenity, taking account of location sensitivity and existing uses. Adverse effects acceptability depends on development nature and location, with residential areas being most vulnerable.

The acceptability of adverse effects on environmental quality will depend on the nature of the development and the location, with the most sensitive sites, such as residential areas, being more vulnerable. The LDP will seek to encourage improvement in environmental quality as a result of new development. This may include measures such as: • The remediation of contaminated land as part of redevelopment; • Careful design to minimise nuisance to adjoining residents and occupiers; and • Use of appropriate mitigation measures, such as replacing existing obtrusive lighting with low level installations.
