Protected Routes - Definition and Purpose
Protected routes are designated roads that restrict new or intensified access to maintain safe traffic movement and prevent congestion. These include primary routes, cross-border connections, and routes to ports and airports.
There is a long established policy of restricting access onto protected routes. These routes comprise:
• Primary routes;
• Routes between the principal town in each district and/or cross border;
• Routes to ports and airports; and
• Selected routes with high traffic flows.
