Design and access statement requirements

The council may require a design and access statement to accompany development proposals. Where required, it should identify the design approach for inclusivity, key scheme issues, sources of guidance used, and for existing buildings, how structural constraints have been overcome.

The council may require the submission of a design and access statement to accompany a development proposal. The preparation of the statements can help create buildings and places which are accessible and inclusive. Where a design and access statement is required it should identify: The design approach to ensure it is inclusive; Key issues of the particular scheme; The sources of advice and guidance used; and In the case of existing buildings, identify the constraints posed by the existing structure and its immediate environment and how they have been overcome.
