Inert waste deposition on land
Inert waste can be deposited on agricultural or other land for land improvement or reclamation, but must not adversely affect natural heritage or the environment. The quantity deposited should be the minimum necessary to achieve the proposed improvement, with the main purpose being land quality enhancement rather than waste disposal.
Whilst not necessarily a sustainable waste management solution and not favoured by the waste hierarchy, the deposition of inert waste on agricultural or other land can result in an improvement in land quality or can facilitate land reclamation for necessary development. However, in all cases care needs to be taken to ensure that such schemes do not adversely affect natural heritage interests and the wider environment. The main purpose of such a proposal should clearly be to improve land quality rather than the disposal of waste. In this regard the quantity of waste to be deposited should be the minimum required to achieve the proposed improvement.
