Waste Infrastructure - Introduction and Strategic Context
The Plan Strategy supports sustainable waste management aligned with Northern Ireland's Waste Management Strategy, moving away from landfill toward resource-based approaches. Both regional and council waste management plans are material considerations for assessing waste management facility proposals.
Moving towards more sustainable waste management is a key government objective for the future. The emphasis on waste management in NI is changing away from landfill in favour of more sustainable methods where waste is treated as a resource. The Plan Strategy will have regard to the Waste Management Strategy for Northern Ireland (WMS) and the council's Waste Management Plan (WMP). Both the WMS and WMP are important material considerations in assessing development proposals for waste management facilities.
