Shared meanwhile uses in interface areas

Shared meanwhile uses should be promoted as a tool to create shared community spaces, improve social integration, and support urban regeneration in interface areas by activating vacant community spaces.

The policy encourages shared meanwhile uses as a tool to be used alongside other local interventions to promote social integration in interface areas, and create opportunities for shared community spaces that assist in building community confidence and safety. Shared meanwhile uses will utilise contested vacant community spaces, which are often local eyesores, and can often be a catalyst for physical renewal, adding vibrancy to an area with renewed visitor interest and increased footfall. In some cases, meanwhile spaces can be a pilot scheme for shared community business start-ups that can lead to increased enterprise and economic development, which, if successful, can lead to business growth and expansion. Shared meanwhile uses will encourage a more realistic, pragmatic and incremental approach to urban regeneration of the interface areas.
