Community Involvement and Reconciliation in Development

Development proposals should involve early engagement with affected communities to build community cohesion, ensure shared sense of belonging, and address community needs. Community involvement processes should enable dialogue between different sides of communities and provide developer feedback.

The key principles outlined within this policy seek not only to address the physical legacy of 'the troubles' and influence the spatial form of the future city, but also to ensure that the processes used in developing proposals serve to build community cohesion and strengthen good relations. The early involvement of affected communities can play a significant role in embedding reconciliation in the development process, ensuring that all sides of the community have a shared sense of belonging in new places, as well as ensuring that community needs are adequately met. Consequently, community involvement should where possible seek to provide opportunities for affected communities to discuss proposals with each other, as well as providing feedback to a developer.
