Maintaining legibility of listed buildings through alterations

Extensions and alterations must not diminish the recognisability of a listed building's distinctive characteristics such as its style, era, functional use, or architect, consistent with international conservation charters.

Extension and alterations works should not dilute the legibility of the building, for example as one of a unique style / design, era, functional use, particular architect / builder. This approach is consistent with international conservation charters such as the venice charter.
