Conservation principles for extensions and alterations
Works to listed buildings must follow conservation principles of maximum retention of historic fabric, minimum intervention, and clarity, with extensions being subservient, appropriately scaled, using suitable materials, and sensitive to the building's age, style, and functional history.
Alteration works including extensions to a listed building must seek to comply with fundamental conservation principles (maximum retention of historic fabric, minimum intervention and clarity) to the furthest extent possible. Extensions should be subservient in nature to the main building, of an appropriate scale and use appropriate materials. Extensions should also be sensitive to the age and style of the host building, the design intent of the original architect, the historic functional use of the building and in keeping with the character and appearance of the area. In assessing the effect on historic fabric account will be taken on the impact on internal fabric, plan form and structure.
