Conversion of commercial premises to residential use

Conversion of floorspace above commercial premises for residential use can contribute to high-density development in key locations such as city centres and local centres. The residential use must not disrupt the ground floor business functions to protect economic vibrancy.

Conversions of floorspace above commercial premises for residential use, can make a small but valuable contribution to the promotion of high-density development in key locations such as city centre, local and district centres and city corridors. This form of housing will not suit everyone but does provide further choice to the housing mix and can help to contribute to the supply of affordable rented housing. When considering conversion and / or subdivision over commercial businesses the residential use must not disrupt the functions of the ground floor business to protect the economic vibrancy of the area.
