Trees and landscape retention and provision
Trees should be carefully specified and sited to allow adequate growth, avoiding raised planters that restrict roots. Existing trees should be retained where possible, and new tree planting should be provided where trees are removed by development.
Trees and landscape add value to the quality of public realm and can play a key role in the integration of public space with surrounding areas. In cases of hard landscape areas, trees should be carefully specified and sited to allow adequate soil volume, light, water and air for healthy growth while avoiding raised planters which may result in restricted tree growth. Where landscape proposals form part of a development scheme, due cognisance should be given to the retention of natural features where possible. This would include seeking the retention of existing trees in and around the site and the provision for new tree planting in cases where trees are removed as a result of development.
