Lifetime homes standard requirement for housing
Dwellings must be designed to provide accessible and adaptable accommodation for all occupants across their lifetime. Housing associations have been required since 1998 to build to the 'lifetime homes' standard as set out in the Department for Communities Housing Association Guide.
Dwellings should be designed to provide accessible and adaptable accommodation for everyone, from young families to older people and people with a temporary or permanent physical impairment. Since 1998 the requirement for housing associations to build to the 'lifetime homes' standard has been in place in Northern Ireland and is set out in the DfC Housing Association Guide (HAG), which includes both the UK-wide lifetime homes standards and a series of additional requirements.
