Justification for residential density policy

Explains that the policy balances housing growth through increased density with quality design appropriate to location, following Strategic Planning Policy Statement requirements.

The SPPS requires a number of measures to be included in development plans, including the need to 'set density levels for housing sites appropriate to the location of the site and the character of the surrounding area'. The Plan Strategy seeks to accommodate housing growth by increasing density without town cramming. In accordance with the SPPS, this will need to be delivered in a sensitive way, striking a careful balance between meeting housing needs whilst ensuring well-designed developments appropriate to their locations. The SPPS recognises that higher density housing development can be accommodated in city centres and other locations that benefit from high [accessibility].
