Policy SD1 – Settlement hierarchy

Belfast district consists of four settlements: Belfast City as the principal regional centre for administration, services and cultural amenities; and three small settlements (Edenderry, Hannahstown, Loughview) as distinct rural settlements providing focal points for rural communities with local facilities.

Classification Role and function Settlement: Principal City - The regional centre for administration, specialised high order services and cultural amenities. It is the regional gateway with links to other European cities, and provides the largest transport hub for NI. Belfast City. Small Settlements - Distinct rural settlements in the countryside.
