Belfast·LDP Plan Strategy 2035 (adopted 2023)·Page 10·1.1.2
Belfast's Unique Character and Economic Heritage
Belfast's distinctive identity is shaped by its location, environment, history, culture and commerce, and the plan recognises the city's role as an economic driver for the region with a heritage rooted in industrial innovation from the textile, shipbuilding and engineering sectors.
The LDP Plan Strategy recognises that Belfast has a unique "sense of place" shaped by its location, environment, history, culture, and commerce, which has enabled the city to be the economic driver for the wider region. It was one of the "economic powerhouses" of the industrial revolution; propelled by the new technologies of the age. The city's growth was due to the innovations in the textile, shipbuilding and engineering industries, which reached its pinnacle in the 20th century.
