Water Closet Compartments – Dimensions and Layout

Diagram 6.3 provides detailed dimensional requirements for three types of WC compartments: one for ambulant disabled people, an enlarged compartment, and a standard compartment with inward opening door. It specifies grab rail positions, activity spaces, shelf heights, and door swing clearances.

Diagram 6.3 Water closet compartments (a) WC compartment for ambulant disabled people - Grab rail not less than 500 mm long - Grab rail not less than 500 mm long - Shelf 950 mm above floor level - Clothes hook set at 1400 mm above floor level - Activity space clear of door swing not less than 750 mm - Not more than 480 mm - 680 mm - 800 mm - Not less than 200 mm - Not less than 800 mm - Not less than 1200 mm - Not less than 750 mm activity space clear of door swing (b) Enlarged WC compartment - 600 mm grab rail set at 15° or horizontal as required - 600 mm long additional grab rail if required - Activity space - Horizontal closing bar (c) Standard WC compartment with an inward opening door - 450 mm vertical grab rail 600 mm long set at 1100 mm from the centre line to floor level - 450 mm diameter space (on plan) clear of door swing - Zone for fold-down changing table if required - Horizontal closing bar - Activity space - See paras 6.13, 6.14 and 6.22
