Defined terms: Principal entrance, storey, and accessibility

Definitions of key terms including principal entrance, principal entrance storey, principal storey in a dwelling, and related access terminology used throughout Technical Booklet R.

Principal entrance (in relation to a dwelling) – has the meaning assigned to it by regulation 90 in Part R of the Building Regulations. Principal entrance storey – the storey or storeys where the principal entrance or entrances are located. If an alternative accessible entrance is to be provided by virtue of paragraph 3.1 the storey containing that entrance is a principal entrance storey. Principal storey in a dwelling – has the meaning assigned to it by regulation 90 in Part R of the Building Regulations.
