Discharge pipes from tundishes - General requirements

A discharge pipe from a tundish should – (a) be made of – (i) metal; or (ii) other material that has been demonstrated to be capable of safely withstanding the temperatures of the water discharged and is clearly and permanently marked to identify the product and performance standard (e.g. as specified in the relevant part of BS 7291-1); (b) be at least one pipe size larger than the outlet from the safety device or manifold discharging to the tundish; (c) be no longer than the equivalent in hydraulic resistance of a straight 9 m length of pipe unless its size is increased in accordance with paragraph 2.15; (d) have a vertical section of not less than 300 mm long below the tundish before any elbows or bends in the pipework (see Diagram 2.1); and (e) have a continuous fall.
