Ventilation strategy: extract ventilation and whole building air exchange
The Technical Booklet adopts a strategy using intermittent or continuous extract ventilation from specific rooms to control moisture and pollutants locally, combined with whole building ventilation to provide fresh air and dilute residual contaminants throughout the building.
This Technical Booklet adopts the following strategy (systems that comply with the strategy are described in Sections 2 and 3) –
(a) using either intermittent or continuous extract ventilation from rooms where most water vapour and/or pollutants are generated to provide local control and minimise general spread to other areas (e.g. activities such as cooking, bathing or photocopying);
(b) calculating the whole building/dwelling ventilation requirement to provide fresh air to the building and to dilute and disperse residual water vapour and pollutants not dealt with by extract ventilation as well as removing water vapour and other pollutants that are released throughout the building (e.g. by building materials, furnishings, activities and the presence of occupants). Whole building/dwelling ventilation provides nominally continuous air exchange;
