Diagram 2.3 - Complementary Steps Tactile Warnings
This diagram illustrates the placement and dimensions of tactile warning surfaces (corduroy hazard warning surfaces) on external steps with side access onto intermediate landings, showing requirements for both cases where the distance from access to top and bottom of flights is at least 800 mm and less than 800 mm.
Diagram 2.3 Complementary steps - tactile warnings
(a) external steps showing side access onto intermediate landing and having not less than 800 mm from the access to the top and bottom of flights
- Stair width not less than 400 mm
- Tactile warning on top landing: 400 mm
- Tactile warning on bottom landing: 400 mm
- Corduroy hazard warning surface 400 mm
- Continuous handrail opposite access
- Visual contrast to tread and riser (see para 2.11 and 2.12)
(b) external steps showing side access onto intermediate landing and having less than 800 mm from the access to the top and bottom of flights
- Stair width not less than 400 mm
- Bottom landing with corduroy hazard warning surface less than 800 mm
- Corduroy hazard warning surface to extend not less than 400 mm at each side of the flight (unless the landing is bounded at a distance of less than 400 mm by a return wall) and stop 400 mm from the nearest nosing
- Corduroy hazard warning surface to the top and bottom landings should be 800 mm deep where the approach to the steps is head-on and 400 mm deep where the approach is not head-on
- Visual contrast to tread and riser
(c) Stair width not less than 400 mm
- Top landing 400 mm
- Corduroy hazard warning surface 400 mm
- Not less than 400 mm spacing
- Not more than 1200 mm and not less than 800 mm overall dimension
