Alterations and extensions to Listed Buildings
Listed Buildings vary in their capacity to accommodate change without losing special interest. Proposals to extend or convert Listed Buildings must retain the essential character, special architectural or historical interest, and the character of the building's setting.
While many Listed Buildings can tolerate some degree of thoughtful alteration or extension to accommodate continuing or new uses, they do nevertheless vary greatly in the extent to which they can accommodate change without the loss of special interest. Some may be sensitive even to slight alteration, especially those with important interiors or fittings. Proposals to extend or convert Listed Buildings should therefore retain the essential character and special architectural or historical interest of the building and the character of its setting.
