Work to historic or architectural merit buildings

When undertaking work to or in connection with a building of historic or architectural merit, the aim should be to follow the guidance in this Technical Booklet to the extent that it is practicable. Particular issues in relation to work to buildings that warrant sympathetic treatment and where specialist advice from conservation experts would be beneficial include – (a) restoring the historic character of a building that has been subject to inappropriate alteration (e.g. replacement windows, doors and rooflights); (b) rebuilding a building (e.g. following a fire or filling in a gap site in an historic terrace); and (c) making provisions for the fabric of historic buildings to "breathe" to control moisture and long term decay problems.
