Table 4.5: Performance of fire doors

This table specifies the minimum fire resistance ratings required for fire doors based on their location within a building and the testing standard applied (BS 476: Part 22 or relevant European standard). Fire resistance is measured in terms of integrity (minutes) and may include suffix letters S or Sa depending on the door's function.

Performance of fire doors Location of door | Minimum fire resistance of door in terms of integrity (minutes) when tested to BS 476: Part 22(1)(3) | Minimum fire resistance of door terms of integrity (minutes) when tested to the relevant European standard(3) 1 In a compartment wall separating buildings: As for the wall in which the door is fitted, but a minimum of 60 | As for the wall in which the door is fitted, but a minimum of 60 2 In a compartment wall not described in item 1 above – (a) where it separates a flat from a space in common use: 30S(2) | E30Sa (b) where it forms part of a protected shaft forming a stairway situated wholly or partly above the adjoining ground in a building of Purpose Group1(a), 2, 3 or 5: 30S(2) | E30Sa (c) enclosing a protected shaft forming a stairway not described in (b) above: Half the period of fire resistance of the wall in which it is fitted but 30 minimum and with suffix S | Half the period of fire resistance of the wall in which it is fitted but 30 minimum (d) enclosing a protected shaft forming a lift or service shaft: Half the period of fire resistance of the wall in which it is fitted but 30 minimum and with suffix Sa | Half the period of fire resistance of the wall in which it is fitted but 30 minimum (e) not described in (a), (b), (c) or (d) above: As for the wall it is fitted in, but with suffix S if the door is used for progressive horizontal evacuation | As for the wall it is fitted in, but with suffix Sa if the door is used for progressive horizontal evacuation 3 In a compartment floor: As for the floor in which it is fitted | As for the floor in which it is fitted 4 In the wall of a protected shaft, not described in items 2(b), (c) or (d) above, which is – (a) a protected stairway (other than one described in item 9 below): 30S(2) | E30Sa (b) a lift shaft or a service shaft: 30 | E30 (c) any other shaft: 30S(2) | E30Sa 5 In the enclosure of – (a) a protected lobby or protected corridor to a stairway: 30S(2) | E30Sa (b) a protected lobby approach to a lift shaft [see paragraph 2.66(b)]: 30S(2) | E30Sa (c) any other protected corridor: 20S(2) | E20Sa (d) a place of special fire hazard: 30S(2) | E30Sa 6 In an external wall and giving access to an external escape route: 30 | E30 7 Subdividing – (a) corridors connecting alternative storey exits: 20S(2) | E20Sa (b) dead-end portions of corridors from the remainder of the corridor: 20S(2) | E20Sa
