Artificial lighting in escape routes (non-domestic buildings)

All escape routes in non-domestic buildings must have adequate artificial lighting. Standards for installation are given in BS 5266-1.

Other than in a dwellinghouse all escape routes should have adequate artificial lighting. The areas listed in Table 2.9 should also have escape lighting, which will illuminate the escape route if the mains supply fails. Standards for the installation of escape lighting are given in BS 5266-1. Escape lighting to escape stairways should be on a separate circuit to that supplying any other part of the escape route or building.
