Use of space within protected stairways
Protected stairways may only contain limited accommodation and services: sanitary facilities (not cloakrooms), lifts (with restrictions in single-stairway buildings), and in multi-stairway buildings only reception areas up to 10 m² or fire-resisting cupboards.
A protected stairway, other than a firefighting stairway (see Section 6), should not contain any accommodation or services other than –
(a) sanitary accommodation or wash rooms provided that they are not used as a cloakroom;
(b) a lift, provided that in a building (or part of a building) with a single escape stairway the lift motor room is over the lift shaft or outside the protected stairway; and
(c) where it is not the only protected stairway in a building (or part of a building) –
(i) a reception desk or enquiry office area having an area of not more than 10 m2 and located at ground or access level; or
(ii) a cupboard formed by fire-resisting construction.
